The Three Sedergreens bring generations of music to Hawthorn Arts Centre

Local jazz royalty Bob Sedergreen and his two sons Steve and Mal Sedergreen are reuniting in a musical family performance that celebrates the world of jazz and blues at Hawthorn Arts Centre on Friday 30 August.

Bob Sedergreen is a renowned name in Melbourne’s jazz scene, amassing over 60 years performing as a well- respected jazz pianist, composer and educator. Bob has played alongside musical talents such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Nat Adderley and Dizzy Gillespie among other jazz greats throughout his musical career that continues to endure the test of time.

Raised on a diet of jazz and popular music across all genres, it is no surprise that sons Steve and Mal have grown up to forge their own musical paths in professional music and teaching like their father. Steve is a charismatic pianist and well-known jazz identity in Melbourne, and Mal a spirited saxophonist and talented instrumentalist.

The Three Sedergreens first performed over 20 years ago, having never played previously given Bob and Steve are both piano players. Joined by an outstanding line-up of musicians, witness this beloved musical family as they perform jazz and blues from the likes of Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, original arrangements based on funk, latin and African styles, as well as popular artists such as Stevie Wonder and The Beatles.

Jazz-lovers and musicians across Melbourne will have encountered or at least heard of one of the Sedergreens, either as a teacher or performer. This show is a rare stage performance for the family collective and audiences can expect a unique Sedergreen style of music that brings a joyful energy to the stage, making every concert performed by the trio feel like a celebration.

The Hawthorn Arts Centre presents an exciting and varied arts program and is home to performance, exhibition, workshop and events spaces. Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the Events Bar or explore Hawthorn and discover thearea’s culinary delights.
