The Parlour presents new show: Grainger at Home, Saturday 6 July

The life and music of one of Australia’s most talented musicians, Percy Grainger, will be brought to life by acclaimed Melbourne opera ensemble The Parlour and award-winning performer Hannah Vanderheide. The new show Grainger at Home will take to the Kew Court House stage on Saturday 6 July

Former Boroondara resident Percy Grainger was a global star in the early 1900s, selling out shows for his piano recitals. Grainger at Home is an exciting new work exploring the private and creative life of the acclaimed composer, lyricist and performer, through the voice of his wife Ella, sharing stories of their life together and touching on more than a few simmering issues in the Grainger saga.

Ella is played by award-winning Melbourne performer Hannah Vanderheide (pictured), previously of Neighbours, Winners & Losers and Counter Play. Vanderheide was also recently honoured as the sole recipient of the Showcast scholarship for the latest Howard Fine Masterclass.

The music presented includes songs and piano solos written by Percy Grainger and his friends, as well as the rarely heard Five Settings of Ella Grainger, performed by The Parlour. This group of Melbourne artists bring fine music to life in intimate environments, often away from the conventions of the concert hall. Grainger at Home will feature David Lempriere-Laughton (piano), Karen Van Spall (mezzo soprano) and Adam Miller (baritone).

Audiences can expect to hear classics such as Wedding Day at Troldhaugen Op. 65, No. 6 by Edvard Grieg, Willow Willow by Percy Aldridge Grainger (dedicated to Roger Quilter), Shallow Brown, a sea shanty arranged by Percy Aldridge Grainger, plus many more.

The Parlour and Hannah Vanderheide will present a unique homage to Percy and Ella Grainger in the historic and intimate Kew Court House for a night not be missed.

Once a police station and court house, the Kew Court House is a charming heritage building that has been redeveloped into a thriving contemporary cultural centre. The venue now provides a unique, intimate performance space with extraordinary ambience, where some of Australia’s most exciting artists perform.
