StageArt announces the cast of Garfield: The Musical

StageArt is excited to announce the cast for the first ever Australian production of Garfield: The Musical with Cattitude, which will play at Prahran’s Chapel off Chapel from 3 April to 13 April 2018. The claw-some show is anticipated to be a school holiday must-see, and with adults tickets at kids prices it’s purrfect for everyone!

In alignment with StageArt’s mission to create greater diversity in theatre, the performance of Garfield on Monday 9 April will be both relaxed and Auslan interpreted, opening up access for kids and families with special needs to have the wonderful and sometimes life changing experience of going to the theatre.

Starring as Garfield, the lazy cat noted for his love of lasagne, snoozing his days away and his hatred of Mondays, is Lachlan Graham. Originally hailing from Bendigo, Lachie graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre). He played Young Ben in the star-studded production of Follies In Concert (StoreyBoard Entertainment) and originated the role of Luke in It’s Done as part of the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Most recently he was the male swing for StageArt’s Falsettos.

Garfield’s nemesis, Nermel, will be played by Laura Greenhalgh. In 2015, Laura secured a contract at Universal Studios Singapore, where over the course of 13 months she performed and covered multiple roles in The Mel’s Dinettes, Sesame Street Saves Christmas and The Hollywood Dreams Parade. In 2017, Laura toured to Dubai and Singapore with the children’s entertainment group Hi-5 and the Chatterbox Playtime! Show. Upon returning to Melbourne, Laura appeared as Meg and a member of the ensemble in Merrily We Roll Along with Watch This and as a member of the ensemble in the Australasian premiere of Memphis with StageArt. Most recently, Laura returned from a tour of Manila with Pen2Stage Productions, where she played the role of Princess Aleah in Aladdin’s Adventure.

Garfield’s three friends – Odie, Jon and Arlene – will be played by Callum Warrender, Alec Steedman and Grace Browne respectively.

In 2014, Callum made the move from Adelaide to Melbourne to study a Diploma of Music Theatre at APO Arts Academy as a scholarship student. Before graduating, Callum was lucky enough to be contracted on board Holland America Cruise Line as a singer, touring North and South America, Europe and even hitting Antarctica. Since returning to Australia, Callum made his music theatre debut in StageArt’s Memphis the Musical (Ensemble/Huey Understudy). He has also been busy developing new Australian works in conjunction with HomeGrown as well as joining the faculty at DanceWorld Studios as a singing teacher and Music Theatre lecturer. Callum most recently performed his own self-devised cabaret at Odd Sods and Thingamabobs and has been cast in the upcoming Australian musical, TINDER TALES as part of Melbourne Comedy Festival, both with Something Blue Productions.

Alec is a Melbourne based actor and musician with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre) from the Victorian College of the Arts. Whilst at the VCA, Alec had the pleasure of playing the role of Underling in their production of The Drowsy Chaperone as well as portraying various characters and ensemble members in the productions Oh What a Lovely War, Mate! and Company. In 2018, Alec has enjoyed playing Officer Curio in Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s production of The Twelfth Night and is looking forward to pursuing his Honours study at the VCA.

Grace is a 2016 graduate of Showfit, Centrestage Performing Art School’s 2 year full-time musical theatre course. Prior to her study at Showfit, she spent 2014 at The Victorian College of the Arts, training in their Musical Theatre Foundation program. Since graduating, Grace attended 16th Street Actors Studio studying the Meisner Technique under the guidance of Jason Raftopoulos. Grace made her StageArt debut in 2017, playing the role of Thea in Spring Awakening and is so excited to be back with StageArt and drawing upon her inner feline to bring Garfield the Musical to life!

As previously announced, Luigi Lucente will be directing the show, fresh from performing in Muriel’s Wedding the Musical for Sydney Theatre Company and Global Creatures. Luigi has appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar (The Production Company), Guys & Dolls (Donmar/ATG), Jersey Boys (Newtheatricals/Dodgers), Wicked (GFO) and The Rocky Horror Show (ATG/GFO). Other theatre roles include Tony in West Side Story (Packemin), as well as touring his one-man cabaret show, Jim Morrison: Kaleidoscope extensively throughout Australia.

It’s a musical fit for the whole family, a fast-paced comedy that spotlights coming of age and the unwavering strength of true friendship.

StageArt, led by Katherine Armstrong and Robbie Carmellotti, are excited to be staging their first youth offering and continue to produce groundbreaking musicals that are rarely seen on Australian stages. The company strives to cast its shows with diversity and equality by showcasing the extraordinary talent that exists locally.
