South Asian culture comes alive at Bunjil Place

Unique works by contemporary artists with ties to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan will immerse audiences with Continental Shift: Contemporary Art and South Asia exhibiting until 22 September, coupled with an inspiring program of talks and workshops.

Guest curated by Rodney James,the exhibition invites audiences to look at the artistic portrayal of South Asia, as a multi-layered region with complexities seen through its divergent people and cultures.

To accompany the exhibition and in celebration of South Asian culture,Bunjil Place will host a one-time-only Indian dance and music extravaganza.Long Pasts, Possible Futures of South Asian Australian Artssees local Indian dance and music groups reflect, debate and celebrate the journey of South Asian arts in Australia.Free in the Studio on Saturday 21 September, 2.00 pm – 5.00 pmLimited spaces. Reflecting the journey of South Asian migrants,Inside/Outinvites audiences to explore how identity is formed, reshaped, multiplied or fragmented with an experimental duet between musician Hari Sivanesanand dancer Priya Srinivasanon Saturday 3 August, 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm.

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, internationally renowned artist Nusra Latif Qureshiwho now lives and works in Melbourne will host an artist talk sharing her perspective on the visual history of Australian and South Asian culture, and will delve deeper into her photographic and painting practice on Sunday 21 July, 2:15 pm.

Drawing on inspiration from mythical and animalistic figures, to botanical and auspicious symbols, art lovers can join acclaimed artist Kate Beynon andlet their creativity flow through watercolour techniques with Fantastic Spiritson Wednesday 17 July, 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm.

Curious minds will also be able to hear the research, rationale and logistics behind the exhibition with Rodney James’ Curator Walk and Talk: Making South Asiaon Saturday 17 August, 3.30 pm.
