Seeing voices

Participating artists: Damiano Bertoli, Erik Bünger, Catherine or Kate, Michael Cook, Fayen d’Evie & Bryan Phillips, Léuli Eshrāghi,
Alicia Frankovich, Susan Hiller, Alex Martinis Roe, Angelica Mesiti, Clinton Nain and Rose Nolan.

An exhibition that thinks through how the voice is visualised, employed and reimagined in contemporary art opens at Mildura Arts Centre on 2 March and runs until 2 April.

Seeing voices, a collaboration between NETS Victoria and Monash University Museum of Art I MUMA uses the Monash University Collection as a springboard for thinking through the voice. The exhibition encompasses drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and video, and a live performance with each iteration of the exhibition.

In the exhibition, the voice might act as a metaphor for collective action, for speaking out against injustice and coming together in gestures of solidarity. It can be a marker of cultural and geographic specificity or the trace of disappearing language. It may also function like a spiritual medium; through its historical recording and archiving it time-travels to haunt the present. The voice is also an index, a measure of position, perspective, distance and emotion. In private, in public, in conversation, on record – the voice connects our experiences with those of others.

In addition to artworks selected from the Monash University Collection, Seeing voices features loans from Australian and international artists.

Monash University Museum of Art I MUMA was a recipient of NETS Victoria’s 2015 Exhibition Development Fund. The annual exhibition development fund supports the Victorian arts sector with grants of up to $10,000 to Victorian arts organisations who wish to develop new exhibitions of contemporary art, craft or design with the potential to tour.

Mildura Arts Centre is the second venue to exhibit Seeing Voices in a national two-year tour.
