Hawthorn Makers Market returns to former glory

March 26 2018 Grand opening of newly curated makers market on Sunday 8 April.

Celebrated as one of Melbourne’s oldest and most loved markets, the Hawthorn Craft Market will be reimagined as the Hawthorn Makers Market launching on Sunday 8 April. The market brings together the local community’s most talented artisans and bespoke designers.

Spotlighting the unique offering found in bespoke fashion, jewellery, art, homewares, artisan food and children’s products, the market returns to its former glory, to call the Hawthorn Arts Centre home once again – the venue they first began almost 40 years ago. The community can visit the stunning and contemporary surrounds of the Hawthorn Arts Centre with the Makers Market held on the first Sunday of every month (launching 8 April – due to Easter Sunday).

The Hawthorn Makers Market will boast more than 70 stallholders and provides the perfect way to relax on a Sunday discovering hidden gems and hearing stories from the designers. Visitors can get lost in a sea of crafted goods, starting from The Basement performance space, to the vast Emporium itself, through to the vibrant outdoor courtyard. Re-energise in the Second Empire café before exploring the grounds.

Featuring in the reimagined market are various fresh-faced newcomers:

Young jewellery designer, Anne from Blue Valentine Designs (pictured above) will be making her debut at the Makers Market. She hand-beads her own necklaces, bracelets and earrings from rare and vintage materials collected from Japan, parts of France and Czechoslovakia.

North Balwyn-based designers Simone Simopoulos and her mum Helen will also bring their bespoke jewellery line, KDU Jewellery to the market for the first time. An example of what makes the artisan community tick, together they design unique sterling silver jewellery that attracts people leading a modern bohemian lifestyle.

Other stallholders include handmade Polynesian-style interiors, innovative cake designers and more. Jewellers such as Blue Valentine and KDU Jewellery will be placed on opening day amongst other artists and designers whose livelihood is made possible through the support of local makers markets.

Welcoming those from far and wide, patrons can expect a buzzing atmosphere with no shortage of entertainment on opening day including roving performance artists The Mirror People who will delight market visitors as they mime their way through the stalls.

The market is managed by the Rotary Club of Camberwell, bringing in stallholders from the local and wider Boroondara community. The bespoke designs found at the Hawthorn Makers Market offer independent designers a chance to engage with the community, giving new lease on their beautiful products and allowing their stories to flourish in the eastern suburbs.
