Discover Melbourne’s latest hidden laneway hangout – Handsome Bar is a dark, moody late-night venue and the sister bar to Ergun Elmas’ Middle-Eastern restaurant Souk, both nestled at the end of Bligh Place.
Led by Elmas, general manager Alla Payne (ex-Lucy Liu) and 2IC Stevie Hatz (ex-ST. ALi), the new bar offers up a perch that is perfect for an after-work tipple or late-night date, serving up plant-based bar food that is sure to entice vegetarians and vegans alike.
Popular treats include the homemade ‘sausage’ rolls served with lashings of Rosella t- sauce, ‘bone marrow’ toast with parsley, and the truffled porcini parfait with Pedro Jiminez jelly for a more refined appetiser choice. The menu also serves up salt and pepper vegetables with ‘buttermilk’ and maple, homemade potato chips served with salt and vinegar mousse, as well as Jatz crackers and French onion dip with harissa oil.
“To follow a fully vegan lifestyle takes massive commitment, and kudos to those that do,” says Payne. “Even if it’s supporting a plant-based project like Handsome, you’re contributing more than those who choose to ignore the fantastic food that can be found in a diet containing zero animal products.”
A seat at the bar also affords punters a small glimpse of the vibrant restaurant above, as Souk’s signature neon interior soaks through a gap in the ceiling. Handsome Bar has minimal lighting which means visitors can easily lose track of time, and finish off their night with a visit to Souk for a more substantial feed.
Handsome Bar is an ambient late-night venue which serves up quality cocktails and plant-based fare, no matter what the hour. Located off Flinders Lane, the cocktail bar is perfect for pre or post drinks – a hidden gem of Melbourne’s bustling laneway scene where everyone and everything is Handsome.
