Dance experience celebrates queer culture at Festival of Live Art

Acclaimed American, Melbourne-based artist Jonathan Homsey brings Mx.Red (March 14-24), a virtual dance installation, and a Waackin’ Ball to Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC) as part of the 2018 Festival of Live Art (FOLA).

The free Mx.Red installation combines motion capture technology and live performances to create a new experience of dance, expression and intimacy beyond gender lines. Featuring music by Joyce Wrice (USA), and choreography by Sela Vai (Western Sydney) and Homsey, Mx.Red transports audiences to a portal of movement from another dimension.

An arts maker and manager with many years of experience as a dancer and choreographer, Homsey is interested in the intersection of street dance, visual art and social engagement.

“The concepts explored in Mx.Red are a way for me to unpack the complexities of queer culture, and also our yearning for more human equality in all walks of life,” Homsey says.

The event also includes the Mx.Red Waackin’ Ball, a queer celebration of expression and empowerment through the dance form waackin’. Created in LGBTI clubs in Los Angeles during the 1970’s disco era, waackin’ involves movement of the arms over and behind the shoulder, posing and footwork.

“Queer culture is rooted in that history to empower and create safe spaces as a refuge for expression and authenticity; our current generation is hungry for human equality,” Homsey says.“This is where the work derives from. As artists we offer fantasies of what that world could be – this is my first attempt of many trying to figure out what it could be.”

Audiences can also participate in waackin’ workshops in the days leading up to the ball, which features performances by Melbourne waackin’ group Burn City Waack and international waackin’ champion Junko Sasaki. Participants can decide between two workshops: advanced waackin’ with Sasaki and all level posing workshops with Sasaki and Homsey. For workshop bookings visit footscrayarts.com

Hosted by Arts House, Theatre Works and Footscray Community Arts Centre, the Festival of Live Art captivates inner Melbourne for 13 days in March with over 50 participatory and interactive art experiences.
