The Boroondara Arts Winter School Holiday Program will be taking over the Hawthorn Arts Centre from Monday 1 July to Friday 12 July. This season’s program showcases a selection of creative workshops suitable for pre-schoolers, primary-aged kids (5-12 year olds), as well as offering a folio workshop for VCE Arts and Design students.
A Taste of Circus (1 July, 10.30AM to 12PM)
Escape with Calligraphy Circus (pictured above), returning with a 90-minute workshop that teaches the essential tricks of the trade, including juggling, hula hooping, plate spinning and more.
Pre-School of Magic (2 July, 10AM to 11AM)
Acclaimed Australian magician Cath Jamieson returns for a spellbinding day of fun. Cath will provide junior-primary school kids with an easy introduction to magic tricks; parents, carers and friends are welcome to stay, or return at the end of the hour to witness their children’s newly acquired skills.
Magic Class (2 July, 12PM to 1PM)
Following Cath Jamieson’s workshop with Boroondara’s youngest magicians, senior-primary school kids are invited to delve into the world of magic to learn and sharpen their skills. Cath will teach budding magicians how to perform and perfect magic tricks and will share her secrets for putting on the perfect show for friends and family.
Make a Fantasy Key-ring (3 July, 10:30AM to 12PM)
Favourite school holidays facilitator Naomi Bishop returns to show kids how to create original fantasy key-rings. Inspired by magical creatures, crests and talismans with exciting and playful materials, these original key-rings will be all ready to adorn schoolbags for Term 3.
Folio Preparation VCE (4 July, 1PM to 3PM)
VCE Art and Design students are invited to come along and discuss their developing folios and projects with professional visual artist, Naomi Bishop. Students can receive advice on ways to improve final submissions, as well as information for entry into tertiary institutions – BYO projects.
Master the Art of Cartooning (5 July, 10:30AM to 12PM)
Come and learn the basics of cartooning and master how to draw a simple caricature, and how to bring it to life with facial expressions, body language and humour. Beginners welcome and all materials supplied.
Weaving with WunderWeave
(8 July, 10:30AM to 12PM)
A fun, colourful and yarn-filled workshop with Rachel from WunderWeave that is suitable for children of all ages. Rachel will show participants how to create a super-shaggy wall hanging to take home and brighten up any bedroom. All materials supplied.
Dance like Sia – ‘Cheap Thrills’ (9 July, 10AM to 11AM)
Learn the moves to Sia’s smash hit Cheap Thrills. Bring attitude and a drink bottle to join the endless fun. Parents, carers and friends are welcome to stay, or return at the end of the hour to see the dancers perform.
Dance like Justin Timberlake – ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ (9 July, 12PM to 1PM)
Dance all holiday-long after learning the routine to the infectious song Can’t Stop the Feeling. Parents, carers and friends are welcome to stay, or return at the end of the hour to see the dancers perform.
Upcycle to make a Mystical Beast (12 July, 10:30AM to 12PM)
Have unused animal and dinosaur toys at home? Come along to this workshop and learn how to upcycle them into mythical unicorns, dragons and other fantastical creatures. All materials provided. Bring your imagination!
All events are $25 each and can be booked through the Boroondara website until allocation is exhausted.
