StageArt is excited to bring Broadway masterpiece NINE – The Musical to life at Prahran’s Chapel off Chapel from Oct 12 – 28, with tickets now on sale.
Stepping back into the middle of the 20th century, NINE – The Musical explores the undeniable strength of nine women who help steer the lead character famed Italian film director Guido Contini, through a debilitating mid-life crisis.
At the age of 40 and at the brink of suicide, Guido is forced to confront his promiscuous and selfish ways that have led him astray. Navigating through recollections as early as the age of nine years old, it becomes obvious that each and every woman in Guido’s life, from wife, lover, mistress to mother, are a source of inspiration and intelligence.
“Throughout Guido’s life he has been surrounded by strong, influential women, and the relationships he has had with them, in all their variety of context and time frames, have shaped the person that he is and is becoming,” Rachel Bronca who plays the naïve mistress Carla.
Based on Federico Fellini’s Academy Award winning semi- autobiographical film 8 ½, the musical opened on Broadway in 1989, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Directed and choreographed by Michael Ralph (Boy from Oz, Bring It On, West Side Story) alongside Assistant Choreographer Sheridan Anderson (The Wizard Of Oz, We Will Rock You) and Assistant Director Evan Lever (La Cage Aux Folles, Anything Goes). With Nathan Firmin (The Full Monty, Memphis) leading the musical department as Musical Director.
“In a narrative that shows how far we’ve come NINE – The Musical champions the power of women whilst addressing the realities of sexism that still exist today,” Executive Producer, Robbie Carmellotti.
“Combining the magic of Yestons score with the fresh vision of Michael Ralphs Choreography and Direction will continue StageArts legacy of delivering Melbourne audiences with a mind-blowing theatrical experience. We aim to rival the quality delivered on Broadway in a more up close and boutique setting,” Executive Producer, Katherine Armstrong.
