The most fabulous queer day out, Midsumma Carnival in Alexandra Gardens on Sunday 14 January headlined by the freshest thing in Aussie hip hop Miss Blanks (pictured), is set to kick off summer’s beloved three week Midsumma Festival season. Miss Blanks, with her sharp-witted, raw rhymes and a stage presence like no other, is the trans Brisbane rapper and LGBTQIA+ activist blowing up the scene in a way that’s too loud for the mainstream to ignore. She has supported international stars like Little Simz (UK) and Dai Burger (NYC), played Vivid, BigSound, Dark Mofo and Transgenre festivals, and as an activist she has given talks for TED in London, NYU in New York, as well as being named one of Spotify’s faces for their 2017 marriage equality campaign.
Miss Blanks said: “I’m really excited to be headlining Carnival for Midsumma thanks to the good people at Levi’s. This will be my first ever Midsumma experience and I’m looking forward to taking my entire team with me to present something fresh and exciting for people.”
Miss Blanks is a super fine representation of the diversity that Midsumma is wearing loud and proud this year.
“Just like the rest of the Midsumma program, inclusion is central to Carnival. We have expanded our footprint for families and youth, plus we’ll reveal our first ever tactile and sound installation created especially for Carnival by Slow Art Collective in collaboration with Description Victoria, led by queers who are blind and with low vision” said Midsumma CEO Karen Bryant.
Midsumma Carnival will serve up a heaving tasting plate of performances and personalities from the broader 22 day festival program in one giant showcase, with something for everyone.
The main stage promises sets from genre busting, smash hit drag cabaret act YUMMY; Marion Cranes; Belinda Davids as Whitney Houston; Dolly Diamond with the Melbourne Rainbow Band and Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus; the ultimate 90s experience from Take the Mic Australia; irreverent queer comedy act PO PO MO CO; Miss CeCe Rockerfeller; unstoppable cabaret act Leather Lungs; performers from the circus extravaganza Spectrum; The Belle Miners; Dean Arcuri & Miz Ima Starr; Kate Bush Tribute by Queer Club; not to mention a mini pageant from Miss Gay & Miss Transsexual Australia, and Mr Gay Pride Australia. Midsumma Carnival turns to T Dance from 6pm til late with a DJ line-up including Yo! Mafia; Versey Verse and Luke Agius.
The Picnic Pavilion stage offers up competitions such as Self Made: Fashion Design and Lip Sync Limelight, the famous Dog Show, as well as performances from cabaret artist Zoe Diaq and boylesque artist Anadiction, rabble-rousing circus act KillJoy and glamdrogynous drag deity Glitterfist.
In the space specifically designed for under 18s, the Youth Pavilion with Minus18, DJs Balluk, Jalé and Lilly Street will be turning up the heat pumping out the tunes.
Top this off with food trucks, bars and stalls galore to keep everyone hydrated, fed and in the community spirit, Midsumma Carnival promises to be bigger, more diverse and more beautiful than ever.
