Opera, Shakespeare and Ballet
For the first time ever, Bunjil Place’s 800-seat theatre will play host to some of Australia’s most prestigious arts and theatre companies during the month of July. Opera Australia’s production of Madame Butterfly, Bell Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and The Australian Ballet’s Coppélia will all make their way to south-east Melbourne’s dazzling new arts and entertainment precinct, bringing the best experiences from the city closer to home.
For those who love to love, give way to your inner romantic on Tuesday 17 July and bear witness to Opera Australia’s production of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, a love story that reaches across cultures, across oceans, across time. Directed by one of Australia’s greatest theatrical minds, John Bell, this popular opera is filled with gorgeous music from the lovers’ first rapturous embrace to the intense finale. Hear Opera Australia’s wonderful singers perform with a chamber orchestra, along with a children’s chorus, drawn from local communities, including Berwick’s own Melbourne Youth Chorale.

Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans, will direct a production of Shakespeare’s political thriller Julius Caesar to be performed at Bunjil Place Theatre on Tuesday 31 July. A masterpiece of intrigue and treachery, Julius Caesar will leave audiences breathless at how quickly violence reveals the fragility of democracy. Starring Kenneth Ransom (Gods of Egypt, Belvoir’s Prize Fighter) as Caesar, and featuring an ensemble cast including Ivan Donato (Richard 3), Emily Havea, Louisa Mignone, Nick Simpson-Deeks and Russell Smith, this production stands witness to the assassination that leads to a life and death struggle for power in the Republic.

On Friday 20 and Saturday 21 July, The Australian Ballet will present Coppélia, a sparkling tale of magic and mischief, inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s stories. Swanilda and Franz are in love – until a beautiful stranger, the daughter of the magician Dr Coppelius, appears in town. But she is not what she seems, and Swanilda must rescue Franz from the magician’s sinister workshop – with the help of some fancy footwork! Featuring exquisite costumes by master designer Kristian Fredrikson, irresistible melodies and lively dancing, Coppélia is amusing fun for the whole family.

Bunjil Place is south-east Melbourne’s newest arts, cultural, and entertainment precinct.
